Font problems with GDM/terminal server

Hello everyone!

I've been running into an issue with directory administrator that I 
cannot seem to figure out.  I think it's a font problem.

When I run it locally on display 0:0, all is well.

I also have this machine set up as a terminal server.  So its gdm is 
answering calls from other machines to manage their displays on the 
local network.  (One such "remote" display is via VNC.)

In this environment, whenever I try and run DA, it pukes as soon as it 
tries to list the users/groups in the directory.  If there is no config 
file set up, I can go through the steps of creating a connection.  But 
as soon as it tries to display the contents of the directory, I get:

called:  refress_directory_data

GnomeUI-ERROR **: file gnome-icon-item.c:  line 375 (get_default_font): 
  assertion failed:  (default_font != NULL)
aborting...
Aborted

I've found that if I log in (on the remote machine) and choose a "fail 
safe" session from the gdm log-in window, the DA will run.  I've tried 
picking different fonts from the preference panel, but all I succeeded 
in doing was making things very ugly.

Again, exact same user on display 0:0 (local) can run DA without a 
hitch.

Is this a bug in DA?  Or am I facing some esoteric xfs issue?  Other 
apps seem to run happily on the remote screens.
