Protocol Error received

I am using directory_administrator for the first time in my OpenLDAP 
environment.  I have tried all of the following:

SLES8 for z/Series
SuSE 9 for x86
RedHat 9 for x86

all connecting to different OpenLDAP servers.  In the Case of the RedHat 
system the OpenLDAP system was local, in the case of the others the 
OpenLDAP server was remote.  All systems seemed to find the servers; 
however, upon test connection I received a Connection Failed Protocol 
Error message. 

I am using Directory_Administrator 1.5.1.  I have also tested with 
versions 1.1.9.  Both return the same message.  I am wondering if it is 
related to the fact that I am using simple authentication, i.e. when I 
execute ldapsearch or other ldap commands I use the -x argument.  I have 
also tested ldapbrowser and gq, both work. 

Going through the wizard I answer the following:

Profile name:  LDAP
Server Address:  ###.###.###.###
Search root: dc=my, dc=domain
DN/User ID: cn=manager,dc=my, dc=domain
Password: *****

Any idea what I am doing wrong here?  Is there a "Getting Started" 
Document for directory_administrator?
