With the current architecture I think, it should take some corner-case
coding to do this.  This has been requested in the past, but not as
frequently as possible

Other ideas, that might be useful: template users?  (or is this
overkill?)  The thing is, the code needs a cleanup, and there should be
a way to properly abstract directory operations, because currently there
are a bunch of functions and hmm... no api doc.  Although the code would
be easy to learn I think, mainly due to short code size.
