Unless you're aiming for a specific platform (and if you are, you need
to update your project page to specify that), not all systems that
djb-ware compiles to has autoconf.  You're adding a reliance on
autoconf - how is that not a dependency?  Currently, I can compile (and
have, so it's not a "thought exercise") to systems such as HP-UX and AIX.
Iff I used your package I would now have to source autoconf to build the
software as well (and that perennial chestnut, "which version of autoconf?").

In a subsequent email you said "The autotooled version has *less* code."
I'm now curious what code you intend to strip out, unless you mean source
code simplification, and I can't see autoconf simplifying much except
perhaps qmail's Makefile (which is still easier to read than most GNU
project Makefiles).

Are you providing a package for the end user?  Your intended audience
on the project page reads "System Administrators".
