A more general way of abstracting out the details of unusual build processes, and one which on average requires much less tinkering, is to use a source-based package system. A sysadmin relying on pkgsrc, for example, can install djbdns from source the same automated way as he would any other software available in pkgsrc, and needn't know that djbdns installation is an odd duck (statistically speaking) unless he cares to watch its build process closely. Of course, if you're just trying to have fun with autoconf, then by all means, let the journey be its own reward. :-)
