Other than rather typical math and computer science coursework including
at MIT (but no degree), I have no formal training in cryptography per
se, and no classes for about 15 years or so, since about 1993, I think.  
My crypto background is self-taught. I can probably give you
bibliography of influential books in my crypto-library. I'll list a few
now:

Besides the CRC Handbook of Applied Cryptography(1997) which I've quoted 
from, 

 Decrypted Secrets, Bauer(1997)
 Applied Crypography, Second Edition, Schneier(1996)
 An Introduction to Information Theory, Pierce(1980)
 Information Theory, Ash (1965)

...Not a complete list, and of course doesn't cover historical books
like The Codebreakers by David Kahn, or just malware books such as 
Malicious Cryptography, by Young and Yung, The Art of Deception by 
Mitnick, etc.

And as long as we are name-dropping, I knew and worked with Andy
Sudduth, who helped Robert Morris send the anti-dote to the Morris Worm
from OSF via CSNet in 1987. The Morris Worm brought down the Internet
for 3 days. Morris asserted the worm merely got away from him during
testing at MIT, and that he had no mal-intent. Rather the same story as
a lot of hackers.  The worm's ultra-fast replication that brought down
the internet probably was a bug, but slow replication was also illegal.
Unfortunately, OSF had only a CSNet dialup connection, and CSNet
shutdown before the message could get out, so the anti-dote was
discovered independently by other researchers, and when Morris's message
finally arrived, it was much too little, much too late. Morris paid a
high price, and is the prototype gray-hat, if there are such things.
