1) What's in the log files during a query?
2) Also try dig @127.0.0.1 nyt.com (or *whichever interface dnscache is
listening on*) in case there are resolution problems for "localhost".
3) As Charles said, process-trace dnscache while a query is in effect.
4) Network sniff both the local interface and-or the external interface
while a query is in effect.
