From a technical point of vue, it brings some new ideas in. One I
find really interesting is the prefetching done after the TTL expired.
Upon eviction of the cache, if the resource is popular, then it is
immediatly requested again (instead of waiting for a client request),
and therefore the most recent version of all popular records is always
in cache.
However, I do believe that Google is becoming a serious threat to our
freedom... If their faster DNS servers get used by ISPs (forwarders
let's say) and gets more popular, Google could for instance chose to
block any domain at the DNS level (this is already being done for
illegal websites on Swiss ISPs DNS servers, upon Swiss court rulings),
and also block it on their search engine (which Google already did,
there was at least 1 trial about it). This could effectively make a
website disappear from the Internet that most people know.
They also have their own OS, their own browser. Google is trying to
control way too many layers (hardware for their phone..).
We should also keep in mind that security holes are everywhere, and
this probably also includes Google. People (including individual
employees, not only hackers) could get access to Google's logs,
databases, even changes their programs.. Bottomline is that we can't
just "trust" Google because they provide some cool tools for
developers and finance their Summer of Code..
Usually as an engineer I don't like to hear or say this kind of
bullshit, but there are some serious non-technical issues to be
addressed.
