For the record, I don't know the actual numbers where performance
becomes a problem. The original patch doesn't have any performance
issues, but IIRC it would retransmit more than necessary to lame
servers.

I'm not sure if he ever implemented something different, but he was the
one who brought up the lame server behavior (it's all in the list
archives if anybody wants to know more).
