While that is of course doable, "should I have to"? 
I hope the answer to that one is "no", and that it points to a
deficiency in the new installation scheme.

Manually removing the above file reveals:

ERROR: Destination '/usr/local/sbin/ddns-confgen' already exists and is not a symlink

"Ditto."

Removing that one as well gets me an installation which
successfully completes.
