I ran into this same issue when I first started with DLZ. I ended up
writing my queries in such a way that this data could be returned. It was
complicated to say the least.

However, as soon as I got my queries working correctly, I realized that Bind
(or DLZ) was confused by getting records with different types of data in
them. It would reject a result set because my NS or MX records would be
configured correctly, but the A records are formatted differently (different
number of fields, and different data types), so the result set seemed to
look incorrect to BIND and DLZ.

I gave up when I ran into this wall. I did all I could do with making my
magical (if inefficient) SQL queries do the work, but then found that I
couldn't get the results through Bind and DLZ.

Then someone told me it was purely optional, and so I felt better about
having given up. :)
