Slow performance with MySQL driver on gentoo

Hi all

This is my first post to the list, apologies if I step on any toes or break
any rules.

As part of our BIND DLZ on Rails project (
http://www.opensourcery.co.za/bind-dlz-on-rails/), I've been spending the
last day or so pulling my hair out getting BIND to reliably use the MySQL
driver for zone lookups on several Gentoo boxes.

named starts up fine and answers queries successfully. But after some time
it stops responding to queries for specific clients. I get timeouts with
dig, but the query log shows a lot of activity. After a while longer, its
stops responding totally. The process is up and running, but it won't
shutdown cleanly (you need to kill -9).

I've exhausted my resources and don't know how to go about debugging the
issue. Below is some technical information about the installations (all the
same).

OS: Gentoo
uname -a: Linux dns-5.za.XXXX 2.6.20-hardened-r2 #2 SMP Tue Jun 12 17:46:09
SAST 2007 i686 Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.80GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux
BIND Version (portage): net-dns/bind-9.5.0_p1-r1 [dlz mysql]
MySQL Version (portage): dev-db/mysql-5.0.54
Zones: ~4,000
Records: ~60,000
