Hi Rob Thanks for the response. After a battle with the Gentoo ebuild for bind (see http://bugs.gentoo.org/show_bug.cgi?id=180720) I managed to get 9.5.1-P1 compiled against MySQL 4.22.1 and it seems stable. I killed the session several times on the MySQL 5 server and named reconnected as expected. Thanks for the guidance. I'll make sure the fact gets well publicized and the ebuilds updated.
