that's quite a nice setup, and I see no reason why it shouldn't work in
production.

As an aside: you may know of bind-dyndb-ldap [1] which can be configured
to cache results (documentation at [2] ). It also allows LDAP add/modify
operations via Dynamic DNS updates, though (unfortunately) it requires
patching BIND.
