[announcement] SME/Alpha V5.5 to be orphaned 31 Dec 2003

Dear all,

It is not viable for me to continue to (unofficially) support SME/Alpha
V5.5 after 31 December 2003, the day that Red Hat ceases support for RHL
7.2, on which SME/Alpha V5.5 is based. It may be possible for me to
provide updates after that date by way of the Fedora Legacy project, but
there really is no guarantee of that and therefore I cannot recommend that
anyone continue to use SME/Alpha V5.5 after December 31 2003. If anyone
thinks they can offer continued support, they're welcome to take over the
project, otherwise the project will be buried on Jan 1 2004.

I want to take this opportunity to thank a few people:

- The e-smith/SME Server developers for designing their distribution in a
modular, architecture-independent way, which made it easy to build Alpha
versions.
- Charlie Brady and Gordon Rowell for their help in getting the iso's onto
the ftp server.
- The SME/Alpha users for their feedback, particularly Chaloner Hale for
his many bug reports and his tireless help in getting SME/Alpha V5.5 ready
for release, and Petri Makinen for testdriving the first version, 4.1.2,
and sending me the SRPMS of later SME releases, which I didn't have the
bandwidth to download myself.

Kind regards,
Robert van den Aker
