One option that seems to be overlooked a lot would be to use Mandrake's 
urpmi tools. This would allow for the creation of contrib repostitories 
where if a user wanted to add something to there distro, all that would be 
requrired is running 'urpmi packagename'.  It is pretty much like apt, but 
without having to convert to a completely new system.
