Your initiative is appreciated. I just tryed to explain why contribs.org 
has not claimed it (anymore).

Maybe there are people out there who want to get in touch with 'fellow' 
contributers/developers. I hang around freenode's channels too, and 
benefited from immediate help many times  ;-)
#e-smith didn't make it to the 'broad public' but it's still there.

I wouldn't do that if I was you. Maybe your annonuncement draw enough 
attention to get some 'life' on this channel. Personally I would be 
interested to see what happens. There's 1 catch I guess, you have to be 
ops for a while or 'auto ops' the chan.
