An easier method would be doing the following:

1) make bin/eepro.rom
2) mknbi-rom bin/eepro.rom > /tmp/eepro.eb
3) copy /tmp/eepro.eb to your tftpboot directory
4) change your dhcpd.conf to hand out eepro.eb to your card
5) restart dhcpd

You only need to repeat steps 1-3 to test changes which is now a 1 
minute procedure ;-).

Doing this would help track down where the issue is.  Recently, I had to 
use a couple of obscure options to get Etherboot to be loaded on a 
couple of Compaq machines.  It is possible that you need the same 
(-DBBS_BUT_NOT_PNP_COMPLIANT).

Thanks but no.  Some of the lower level EB magic is still beyond me and 
my time is limited right now.

That is a feature of much discussion.  Right now, it requires a patch...
