I just tried the latest cvs on my Fedora Core 3 with:

$ ld --version
GNU ld version 2.15.92.0.2 20040927

It worked fine without the patch.  I will need to try it on my ubuntu PC 
this evening.  It is possible that the issue only exists in very 
specific ld versions.
