I believe the only target that currently works is .dsk because the 
compressor is not yet working (nor are other prefixes).

This might work with "make bin/rtl8139.dsk"  it may also be the 
specific buggy version of ld that is mentioned in Georg Baum's message 
of 26 May 2005:

It would be interesting to know if the .dsk image builds in your 
environment.
