Insufficient documentation and misleading source led me to believe it 
took 1MB, but...

Now that I know there is a payoff to diverging from the Linux source, I 
asked the responsible hardware guy, and learned how I can safely scale 
back the RX ring.  I now think 40KB should be sufficient, if I'm not 
overlooking anything.

So, Michael, you won your bet.
