Thanks for your suggestion.   

 

I had already tried to figure out a way of doing that, but didn't have
success.   With some of the VMWARE Nics, there is a way of disabling the
ROM, but not all of them.   I did see some references on the internet of
setting the romsize to 0 to effectively disable them.   When I tried it,
even though I specified it for only one NIC, ESX decided to clone the
parameter for all NICs.   And, even with all NICs set to a romsize of 0,
it didn't seem to affect anything.

 

Fortunately, thanks for Shao, I've retried something that didn't work
for me before - UNDIONLY.   I found that I was building it wrong and a
correct build seemed to eliminate the original problem and allow
booting.

 

At this point, I'm running into issues getting the guest  to complete
the boot sequence.   I'm hoping they only apply to the "flexible VMXNET"
adapter and not the "enhanced VMSNET" adapter.   I'll be doing some more
testing  to figure that out....
