It was from the latest Windows Automated Installer Kit for Windows 7 and 2008 R2 and it worked with gPXE without any issues. I used the directions on the gPXE webpage (_http://etherboot.org/wiki/winpe ) for booting from a WinPE environment.

The steps:
1. Chainloaded PXE boot to the undionly driver
2. That saw the iscsi lun and failed to boot it (since there was no OS)
3. I hit ctrl-b
4. imgfetch the pxeboot.n12
5. imgload
6. imgexec

WinPE came up. I ran setup from the DVD and I have a super fast and quiet diskless workstation! If it went right to the DVD after step 2 I could have skipped 3,4,5,6.

I made it sound easy but I had to configure a linux VM with the write tftp and dhcp servers (with tftp remappings) to get this all to work.

I could document/update what's out there already but Im not sure how usable this procedure is....

Good day David,

It is interesting that you wound up using a PXE-booted WinPE environment
in order to install to an iSCSI SAN. I'd have to guess that your WinPE
already had an iSCSI driver integrated, which is good to know. Was your
WinPE a Windows 7 PE? It picked up the gPXE-provided iBFT (iSCSI
parameters) just fine (automatically)? Or did you manually attach to
the SAN from Windows? Did you have to customize this WinPE at all?
