Hold ...I'm obviously missing bits of your idea. Could you explain 
it more fully please?

What I envisioned was this:
Program loads basic emoticon set. This fills out a default set of 
string->image file mappings, as well as providing the image files.

Program then loads subsequent emoticon sets. These can supercede any smiley 
string, for specific protocols if they wish. Specific protocol overrides take 
priority over general mappings.

Is this what you were thinking of? How does yours differ?
