seems like solaris isn't allowing unix domain sockets.

yes, this is the way to do it

looks like you have everybuddy compiled as a gnome applet.  for some 
reason, the applet init function won't ignore flags that aren't meant 
for it.  The only option is to not compile it as an applet.

PS: you might want to consider switching to ayttm 
(http://www.nongnu.org/ayttm/) or eb-lite (which is now called 
everybuddy).
