  My idea for the latter two is that a wrapper perl script would execute the
backend under GDB, and watch for problems, along with this, it would have a log
of the session from the backend's STDOUT/STDERR channels.  When the program
crashes, it would then get a full backtrace, store that in a logfile and restart
the server.

  Some hooks in the GUI for the wrapper could be set up too so that if it
crashes, the GUI can be told to reconnect, and alert the user to the problem and
display the log with instructions on where to send it.
