This is something Mandrake took from Debian, I believe. It is a system 
designed to allow for multiple versions of a program to be able to live 
alongside each other and /etc/alternatives to decide which version to 
use (for example: gcc-2.96 vs gcc-3.2, vim-enhanced vs vim)

Unfortunately, a lot of packages ignore (or partly ignore) it. And the 
fact the Mandrake have been moving it about doesn't help either (used to 
be /etc/alternatives/, now /var/lib/rpm/alternatives/)

Generally fixing it just requires deleting and recreating the 
occasional symlink after upgrades of these packages (gcc, vim, printer 
drivers, javac, mail transfer agent, etc) and once it's working it seems 
to work well.
