(no subject)

I can't get configure to complete for ebqt.  i downloaded the newest tarball 
from the website and the core compiled fine but ebqt gives me errors when i 
run ./configure.
heres the last few lines of output from configure:
checking for dlopen in -ldl... (cached) yes

checking for extra libs... no
checking for libz... configure: error: not found. Check your installation 
and look into config.log

and here is the part of the log file that i think is important:

I'm running a fresh install of debian woody with kde.
any help would be greatly appreciated.
