If it's any consolation, I believe that these updates to the servers were to solve some bugs in their server code. (Which were possibly exacerbated by the behavior of clients like Fire.) For many accounts, as you logged in, the server would send out streams of thousands of identical packets to the client (for about 6 minutes) Either notifying the client that it has mail waiting, or just sending you the yahoo cookies hundreds of times a minute. So if the update solves that problem, then it will all be worth it!
