For what it's worth, the new tabs in Panther are substantially less
obtrusive (horizontally and vertically). With a small alias as the
user's name in a Panther tab, I can fit about six or so conversations
into a single chat window.

Example: http://www.inik.net/bbforumimg/TabInterface.jpg (Yes yes, my
InterfaceBuilder skills are huge, I know... :P )

With a larger window, fitting a dozen or more conversations into a
single set of tabs is not impossible. Granted, this is less than ideal
for people with a zillion conversations, but these users may opt for a
more cluttered multi-window interface and use the conversation browser
instead.

Hmm... For that matter, the conversation browser, itself, could be used
as a low-screen-space alternative way to navigate the tabs,
particularly once the tabs become so small as to be unintelligible.
Additionally, having each conversation show up as a window in the
"Window" menu (or even a tab-manager toolbar button) to let people
quick-select their tab of choice, or even cycle through them by number
(cmd+1 thru cmd+0, for up to ten conversations) would also eliminate
total dependency on tabs without undermining their usefulness in
reducing screen clutter.

Just some thoughts. Personally, I just use the
auto-close-windows-on-send option to shoo away unwanted conversations
and keep screen clutter down, but since I rarely have more than four or
five conversations going at once, having tabs might be a nice
alternative.
