Ah ha.  I thought all the files were in ~/Library/Application Support 
and that deleting the fire files in there would take care of what you 
were getting at.

Prompted me to me dig in instead of delete.

The Buddy List Window Transparency was set to 100%.  Surely I must have 
done that inadvertently before many of my incomplete 
cleanup/reinstalls.

Thanks for the push in the right direction.
