My thought is that coordination with clients that are willing to adopt a
common, open standard should take precedence over compatibility with
proprietary standards such as those for Yahoo and AOL (unless they release
the documentation for their standard).  It even seems like a good idea to
make an RFC out of it -- assuming there isn't already an RFC for secure IM.
It seems that what we're talking about here is a technique for secure IM
that can send messages of a potentially arbitrary size and which works over
transmission units of arbitrary size, perhaps down to a certain minimum.
