As a follow-up to my earlier note... I was just actively using iChat
AV, having unblocked all my buddies in AIM earlier. On a whim, I
decided to fire up Fire (0.99.1) to see how it did.

Fire signed on, briefly showed most of my buddies signed on, then the
door slammed and all but a couple of my buddies were shown as logging
off. At the same time, iChat showed them all logging off.

It seems that somehow Fire or the AIM server is setting most of
buddies to blocked at the server end. I can unblock them with the AIM
client.

No idea why a couple of buddies are remaining unblocked.
