Oh, I know what they are. :-) Since this isn't my mailing list, I 
don't have a say on what's allowed or "appropriate"... but on my 
mailing lists I enforce a bit of netiquette about not sending file 
attachments to the list... instead offering to send them upon 
request, or providing a URL. In the case of digital signatures, 
vcards, and the like, my general stance is that these are appropriate 
for use in cases where the audience is using a known set of software. 
For example, with a small workgroup mailing list at an office, you 
know everyone's using a specific mail client.

Since I use Eudora as my primary mail application, all these teensy 
little files people fling at each lists end up being minor (but 
persistent) nuisances. I think Qualcomm's actually working on or 
already offering a plugin to deal with them in Eudora, but I really 
haven't taken the time to explore this yet.

I've always been a firm believer in the idea that e-mail is a text 
medium, and while it's great to be ABLE to e-mail files to people, 
it's important to do so in a way that takes into account the 
recipients' environment.
