Silent disconnects...

Both MSN and Yahoo have been silently disconnecting a lot (I noticed just now because a friend has signed off AIM and not Yahoo, and upon dis- and reconnecting to Yahoo she was off it as well). Is there any system that could confirm status? Perhaps a message sent to yourself automatically every so often that would be hidden from the user, but would determine that the user is still indeed online, and if not allow for reconnection?
