Ah.  Then, for the sake of accessing them, I'd say just set them to
read as online.  Otherwise, they'll never show on a buddy list that's
set only to display online buddies only (as is the likely habit of most
all users).  Of course, Yahoo buddies could benefit from a similar
change, since you can IM them while they're still offline.  But, that's
another thread...
