Actually, it's more than just "whimsy" or "predatory behaviour of peadophiles" They are just excuses for the real reason - advertising.. MS gives Messenger away free because it is paid for by advertising. it sells advertising space, and different companies, including MS, try to tempt you to look at their products in the hope you'll buy something. These ads are shown in a section of the Messenger client. Same with Yahoo, and ICQ. I'm not sure about AOL/Netscape Messenger, but I suspect it may have something similar. If these networks allow free clients to access their networks, without the ability to show the ads, then the networks are losing advertising money. Hence, they occasionally change their protocols to break the clients to force people to use the proper client, and see the ads. of course, the cluey people who make the free all-in-one clients find out what the changes are and add them, thus keeping the users happy. It is a never ending circle that will never be resolved due tot he corporate mindset of "advertising=incoming money=good".
