I'm thinking it'd be best implemented in a separate column, with icons 
for each 'flag' (e.g. mic icon, video camera/TV icon, game icon if we 
ever support icky msn games, etc). Of course, the column name would 
probably be text.

You could, of course, change the icon, but then you lose the 
service/status/whatever icon (msn, icq, yahoo, microphone, and video 
camera), or you could put it in the status, where you lose the status 
message (what if, say, I'm busy doing homework but wouldn't mind a 
voice chat?). Designing a clean, intuitive interface that works well 
enough for everyone isn't easy (proteus, at one point, removed the 
ability to set an alias at the time of add, so I have to hunt through 
the list for said added person, and then remember to set it, and if I 
don't because I know said person by that name, tomorrow i won't have 
any idea who said person is at all).

I'd also like to be able to see someone's MSN name without messing up 
my aliases, but an interface to allow that would also be icky (dumping 
it in the chat window when it opens is probably the cleanest).

Of course, implementing colors properly, custom time format strings, 
stamping change-of-day in logs and 'tabbed chatting' and everything 
will also have to wait until post-1.0. Shame.
