An Incoming Message Sound Adventure

Once upon a time a happy Fire user upgraded to 1.0, which he really 
enjoyed. He decided that he would set his incoming message sound to his 
favourite sound, as he had done easily with Fire 0.32 through the 
preferences pane. Our intrepid user went through the following steps on 
his adventure.

1. He looked through the preferences of the program, and while there 
were options for sounds and new messages, he could find no way to 
select his favourite sound.

Now, most users would stop right there and become unhappy. But our 
intrepid user, who is a CS graduate student and developer, forged on.

2. Remembering something about a "theme editor" from the Fire Talk 
list, he went looking for this mystical program. He found a "Firebrand" 
program on the Fire site at the bottom of the download page, and 
thought it might be what he wanted, so he downloaded it.

3. He ran the program and figured out how to use it. However, the 
program refused to allow him to add his WAV sound file to the theme.

4. After pondering a little, he figured that perhaps the program wanted 
an AIFF sound file. He loaded up Sound Studio and converted his WAV 
file to AIFF. Presto, Firebrand allowed him to import the file and he 
set up the "Locations" for the sound in the editor. He saved his theme, 
breathless with anticipation.

5. Opening the preferences pane in Fire, he looked around until he 
found the place to add his theme file. He did so, and quickly clicked 
on its check box in the list to activate it. The check box became 
checked, and then unchecked. He tried again, perhaps a half dozen 
times, frustrated by the message "Contains: (null)." He hopefully 
looked in the Sounds tab to see if he could select his theme, but to no 
avail.

6. Finally, the user opened up the Fire.app package, found the 
imrcv.mp3 and ring.mp3 files, renamed them to something else, copied in 
his AIFF sound file as imrcv.aiff and ring.aiff, and restarted Fire. 
Hooray, his sound worked! His grand adventure was finally over. His 
only wish was that the adventure had not been necessary.
