I reached stage 5 without trying 1-4 by trying to install a couple of
.firetheme's referenced on the forum & on (one of) Fire's email lists;
when I got the results you're getting, I dived into the Fire.app
package and manually placed my newfound .firetheme files in
Fire.app/Contents/Themes/ ... at which point I could toggle the themes
on and off in Fire's preferences. See if your .firetheme works when you
do that - that way, you'll know the .firetheme works, and it is in fact
the adding of themes that's gone wonky.
