Around that time I was helping to manage an IRC channel, and the best advice we could give people was to use a proper client, instead of that awful spawn of Satan. For those who don't know (or who've blocked memories of the grim experience, which would be entirely understandable), it presented a 'friendly' view of IRC by letting you pick from a range of characters. Chats could then be presented like a comic strip, complete with speech bubbles. Great if you have a reading age of about three and a half. And terribly annoying to people trying to use the same channel, as comments would be prefixed by odd sequences of characters that made reading very annoying to everyone except other users of Comic Chat, who'd see what cutesy expression you'd managed to apply to the whimsical character you'd decided to be. It was typical Microsoft - add features with scant regard for people using other, standards compliant internet programs. If you thought those unreadable winmail.dat files on email were annoying, Comic Chat was 10 times worse for IRC users. Should you feel some bizarre need to try it, don't just use the program; fire up Ircle or another proper IRC client at the same time and look at the horrible mess that you're inflicting on the channels where you try to use Comic Chat. In my view, we really, really, don't need Fire to chuck out the sort of bizarre disruptive material on IRC channels that CC used to do.
