Using algorithms from papers

If we find an algorithm in a paper, can we use it in Freenet?

The reason why not would be that if it's been published there is an
excellent chance of it being patented - either by the researcher, the
university, or even by somebody reading the paper (though in the last
case it would be invalid).

We should probably assume that IPRED2 doesn't pass for the purposes of
this debate, as that would make it more or less impossible to do any
non-hobbyist non-megacorp programming.
