Okay, here's the official view:

Most of the below is correct, except:

1. Recently with some patches which are I believe being reworked me and
man-di managed to get Freenet to run on Kaffe. It was however rather
slow and CPU usage was 100%. But it did respond to the web interface at
least. So it may be that the NIO problems will be solved soon. Once this
has happened with Kaffe, GCJ will follow quickly.

2. It's not just a matter of Windows. Most people who would want
Freenet, who have the hardware and the patience and agree with its
ideology, run Linux. They are a big part of our potential userbase,
especially if we can provide a proper package. Having it run on open
source software therefore is a marketing priority if nothing else.
