I love freenet. My ISP doesn't.

Man am I ever frustrated.

Seems my ISP installed some sort of software intended
to retard the growth of worms and viruses (or so they
claim). Unfortunately this software pretty much just
stops letting me make TCP connections after I make a
few dozen connections. Needless to say any P2P
software I want to run is pretty much useless.

I've managed to tweak a few protocols (Okay, one
protocol, BitTorrent) to get them running reasonably
well, although with degraded performance. But others
that rely on a large number of connections are
basically shut down by this thing. I've tried
adjusting various settings in my freenet config, but I
can't find any middle ground between not getting any
connections to other nodes and shutting down my entire
connection.

This is definately an ISP problem, I have a friend on
the same ISP with the same problem. The worst part is
my ISP definitely caters to the AOL crowd, so if a
problem doesn't affect web browsing, email, or sending
hundreds of e-cards a day, they don't fix it.

So, my node has been sitting unused for about a month
and a half, with about 25G of storage left for the
freenet store. I've got a 3Mbps/384Kbps connection,
which can pretty much be dedicated to freenet at least
at night.

Of course, being a freenet user, I have a certain
amount of paranoia, and the thought has crossed my
mind that my ISP's intentions are really to shut down
P2P and freenet.

Anyway, the frontline tech support people say they may
lighten up after whatever the latest worm is goes
away. They weren't willing to promise anything,
however.
