It's a while since I looked at this, but I believe that if you compile on
Solaris 8 with the SVR4 macro defined and NO_UTMPX undefined, then the code
should log to wtmpx instead of wtmp; presumably this would make the error
message cease.

You are correct; WU-FTPD patches are usually applied to the source files,
which would then be recompiled and relinked.
Off the top of my head, the process is something like this :-
cd wu-ftpd-2.6.2
where wu-ftpd-2.6.2 is the directory where the WU-FTPD distribution exists.
Then, foreach patch file,
patch -p 0 <fix.patch
where "fix.patch" is replaced by the name of the patch file you are using.
Then recompile ("build sol" or whatever).
For more information on the patch command, run "man patch".
