Quoting Arne Babenhauserheide <[email protected]> from ml.gnutella.dev-forum:
:Gnutella can take care of keyword searches (and can be further optimized to do
:them even better), while Kademlia takes care of hash searches (like nodeIDs,
:exact files, etc.)

Well said.

That is exactly what we should aim for as a first step.

Once this works openly (with several vendors inter-operating), we'll be able
to see how we can improve the design. Just like Gnutella evolved over the
years.

Sure, evolution is a pain if you look at backward compatibility and all the
efforts you need to convince others to change things, but at least you have
something that "works" (albeit imperfectly) meanwhile.

If you start to design for perfection right from the beginning, you'll never
get anything working.

That does not mean we cannot take into account things we can foresee as of
now, but I'm sure there are other things none of us can foresee today and
which will become hot features in the forthcoming years. So let's recognize
that perfection is not a requirement.

Stupidity is not a requirement either.

So let's be smart, but not overly clever.
