There is a very simple way to get all Ups connected again: Increase the outdegree to 64. gtk-gnutella and Phex can already carry the increased load as ultrapeers. Can LimeWire carry it, too? But this will only work for keyword queries. We need Kademlia for things like searching by hash because that can't be done easily with flooding. But while I'm answering: Why don't you, Nikolay, suggest an algorithm which is at the same time efficient, implementable, extensible and safe for the network (doesn't have the danger of unexpected traffic spikes and such)?
