Does an access to the URL return a proper 404? 

If not, some older versions might react by regularly testing, if it's back up 
(I had that problem myself - the server *died* when I *removed* the GWC, since 
my hoster used a nonstandard 404 - adding a clean 404 site fixed the problem).
