So, where's the problem with evaluating ways to do this binary protocol 
differently (opening options like passive nodes) while keeping the complex part 
as it is? 

As much as I enjoyed reading some of your later analyses, this one did 
slightly disturb me:

Uhm, you do know that I was in actively contributing in this list when things 
like dynamic querying and intra ultrapeer query routing table exchange were 
added? 

I experienced what the addition of the download mesh gave us, and I still 
remember chen Limewire added the random number protection of download uris to 
stop web-clients from leaching. 

Also I remember the retreating uphill battles I fought to tell people that 
decentral BitTorrent is not only easily possible, but can already be done in 
Gnutella, and that we'd only need trackers which record who requested files - 
and that we can even integrate normal http sources by just adding an as=… in 
magnets. But then I couldn't program at that time, so I couldn't help making 
that a reality. And noone wanted to add the centralized tracker level, so I 
was quite lost. 

(btw: it's already a semi-reality thanks to freebase.be

but we'd need to have this cache integrated into magnet sites - or for example 
music stores)

Today we have the DHT (more exactly: 2 servents have it, as soon as the next 
gtkg is released), but Bittorrent owns the data transfer (along with 
centralized sites like rapidshare), though it requires dedicated servers where 
Gnutella can use a simple http seed.
