        Key: CORE-2
Summary: Find a way to transmit the number of open upload slots efficiently to the downloaders
       Type: New Feature

     Status: Open
   Priority: Major

    Project: core

   Assignee: Greg Bildson

Environment: All

Description:
We have more and more problems with downloads for which we get very many results, but for which none or only very few of the hosts work.

So some Forum-Users (me included) wish for a better way to find the hosts with the most upload slots first, so we don't have to try a GET on every single one (which can take quite some time for 500 sources).

In the GDF it became already clear, that the download-mesh is the wrong place for that.

Would it be possible to request slot-information via a really tiny UDP-message?

Or that short-time information be stored in the download mesh, which gets deleted after 5 min? Every downloader sends a list of those hosts he tried during the last 5 inutes with their stats to the hosts he downloads from. Then the uploading host sends a list with all hosts in that list, which have open lots (A host reported with no slots kills an entry of it with open slots, and vice versa, so hosts which are busy need also be reported).
Could this information also be shared directly between downloaders in something like an upload-mesh? (so as not to put the strain on the uploader) ?
